Walker Lake historically has been a well known trout fishery and bird watching location. Due to agricultural use of water from the Walker River and the draught, the water level has dropped drastically and the salinity of the lake is very high. Though adult fish still survive in the lake, the salinity level has caused the offspring to not be viable. Without the small fish for food, the birds no longer visit the lake.
The campsites are basic with a shade structure, table, and fire pit. The vault toilets were clean and did not smell. Winds can be very strong here. There is no vegetation to provide a wind break or privacy between campsites.
