About: We are a family owned and operated Chiefland RV Park in Florida. The owners are Darrell, Phyllis and Tommy Rankin. We moved here from Flemingsburg, Kentucky in July of 2000 and bought the park, where we have been here since. We are members of the Chamber of Commerce of Fanning Springs, Florida.
The Suwannee River starts in the Okefenokee Swamps at the Florida and Georgia border. The river is fed by over 197 freshwater springs. In 1791, William Bartram was on of the earliest explores and writers. He wrote about his travels on the little St. Juans (little St. Johns) river, which was later called the Suwannee River. Throughout history many men has used the river for its means of travel, trade and communications. In the 19th century, timber men floated huge rafts of pine, cypress and other wood to the lower Suwannee to be loaded onto ships. During the Civil War the river was a major port for the Confederate supplies. The river was used right up to the 1950s. Today the Suwannee is still the most undisturbed river of the county. Most of its traffic is recreational use.
In October there is the Seafood Festival in Cedar Keys, Florida. And in November, Trenton, Florida has the Down Home Days. In December you can visit the Quilts, Arts and Craft Shows and Christmas Parade in Chiefland, Florida. In Fanning Springs, Florida is the Festival of Lights and Boat Parade. Also, Bell, Florida has a Christmas Parade. And at Manatee Springs State Park you can see Santa Clause Diving in the springs.
There are numerous restaurants local and in nearby towns, such as: Old Town, Cross City, Fanning Springs, Trenton, Newberry, Gainesville, Ocala, Chiefland, Crystal River, Cedar Keys, Suwannee and Homosassa, Florida.
