Sumner Lake State Park offers many activities, such as camping, hiking, swimming, wildlife viewing and fishing. The lake is home for many warm water species including walleye, bass, crappie, and channel catfish.
Sumner Lake, which is along the Pecos River Flyway, is a great place for bird watching. Winter migrants visit the lake, while summer breeding residents appreciate the canyon below the dam.
To get to Sumner Lake State Park from the town of Fort Sumner, take U.S. 84 northwest 10 miles, then go west on N.M. 203 for 6 miles.
