About: Deerhead Campground is located on SH 130, 2 miles south of the Cloudcroft. Interior roads are gravel. Elevation is 8700 feet. 34 family unit. Steep access, sharp turns and limited parking prohibit use of camping trailers. Tables, fire rings, toilets, drinking water, and garbage depositories are provided.

camping at deerhead campground
We stayed at deerhead campground in late june, 2009. The campground had just been rebuilt, and had only been open a week. We stayed there because it is close to cloudcroft. There is no other reason to stay there.
The place is expensive at $17 a night. There is one water faucet available, up by the camp host. A long walk from almost any camp site.
The sign claims that it is for tent camping. This is correct. We have a 1990 VW van, that is 12 feet long, and they allow you to park ...
Deerhead campground is a mile from the village of Cloudcroft, adjacent to Highway 130. It is not the quietest place to camp, but if your goal is to visit Cloudcroft, it is convenient. The campsites are among Douglas fir and pines, with some open spaces as well. The campground is near the new Lincoln National Forest ranger station, if you need maps. Access may be difficult for large RVs and trailers.
As of March 1, 2009, the campground was closed for "improvements". They are doing some earthwork; to what purpose I'm not sure. It usually doesn't open until mid-May anyway, ...
